Athletic Union Awards 2024

Monday 20-05-2024 - 11:55

On Wednesday, 1st of May 2024, the Students' Union held our annual Athletic Union (AU) dinner in the PJ Hall to celebrate the achievements of student athletes who have excelled in their respective sports. The event was presented by Lewis Thompson, the Vice President for Sport, and was a huge success. The evening began with a welcome address from the Vice-Chancellor, who congratulated the student athletes on their outstanding achievements over the past year.

This academic year, we were saddened to have lost a close friend to many and someone who was deeply involved in our sports groups, Matthew McParland. In memory of Matthew, they were awarded the AU President's Award.

Sustainability is extremely important to us here at Undeb Bangor; therefore, we have a Sustainability Challenge Award. This year, the winner of this award was Sub Aqua. The group that took the glory for the Best AU Event Award was Menโ€™s Football. Ping-ponging their way to the BUCS League Winners was Table Tennis.

Our Female Fresher of the Year went to Adaline Merrifield from Pole Fitness, while our Male Fresher of the Year went to Oliver Havis from Handball. Our Student Coach of the Year was awarded to Alex Moseley. Keep up the good work!

We also like to appreciate the hard work of the committee; therefore, we have awards dedicated just to this. Committee Member of the Year went to Paige Bowden, and Captain of the Year was awarded to Madeleine Burgess. Sports Personality was awarded to Holly Aitchinson.

We award clubs as a whole, as like all sports, some things are a team effort. This year's Varsity Team of the Year was Menโ€™s Cricket. The Steve Connor Spirit of the AU Award went to Pole Fitness. The Social Media Award went to Golf. Charity Team of the Year went to Darts. Finally, the Team of the Year was awarded to Darts A Team, and Club of the Year went to Women's Cricket.

We ended the evening with a speech from next year's AU President, Hollie Korobczyc.

Our students have demonstrated exceptional dedication and talent in their respective sports and are truly deserving of this recognition. Their hard work and commitment have contributed to making the university a more vibrant and inclusive community. The AU dinner was a great success, and the university is proud of the contributions of all the student athletes who were recognized at the event. The university looks forward to continuing to support and promote sports and athletics as a vital part of the student experience. Once again, congratulations to all the winners!
