Dear Students, 

 As you are aware the University and the wider higher education sector is experiencing considerable financial challenges. Unfortunately, we are also not immune to these. We want to be transparent with you about how this affects our finances and what steps we are taking to ensure long-term sustainability. 

 As a result of the financial pressures which we are under, we have been reviewing budgets and identifying areas where cost savings can be made. Many of these have already been implemented. 

However, unfortunately, as part of this process we have had to assess the financial sustainability of our free Clubs and Societies model. Whilst we have worked hard to keep these activities free over a number of years, rising operational costs and funding reductions mean we must now work to introduce a membership fee starting in the next academic year. However, how this will look has not yet been finalised. 

This isn’t something that we had hoped we would have to do. Unfortunately, we have no other option that will ensure our and your activities are sustainable, and that provision is safeguarded for the long term. 

We understand that any changes to membership models may be a concern to students. Please rest assured that we will keep you informed of any developments and provide updates as soon as they are available.
