On Wednesday 9th March we saw Bangor University Men's Rugby Union take on Lancaster University RUFC at Treborth which resulted in a stunning victory for Bangor (*OR* and despite the loss, the team still managed to..) and go on to win their British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league for the very first time and will be promoted to the 2A league for next season.

BUCS is the national governing body for Higher Education sport in the UK and supports and promotes the lifestyle and educational benefits of participating in sport.

The men who are led by Sam Grant their Club Captain and James Andrew their Team Captain, go through 4 gruelling training sessions a week as well as 3 gym sessions. It seems that the hard work is paying off.

The Bangor University Men's Rugby Union are supported by a variety of bodies who have helped them achieve this victory, including the Students' Union's (Undeb Bangor) Athletic Union who are 4 times winners of the Best Clubs and Societies in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards. Bangor Sport who have invested in the rugby programme for the past few years have been an integral part of the men's success along with their coach, Joe Simpson, Rugby Hub Officer who also plays for RGC.

Iona Williams, Sport Development Manager, Bangor University says,

โ€œThe University have invested in the rugby programme for a number of years and now seeing the reward. Joe Simpson, Rugby Hub Officer and Coach, and the boys have worked hard all year and deserve the successโ€

They've won every match in their league this season and it just goes to show that all those on-line fitness sessions over the pandemic was worth it. Bangor are lucky to have a combination of great players including some that play for RGC or are here at Bangor on Rugby Scholarships and access to amazing facilities enabling the team to strive.

Congratulations to all the men and all those involved in this triumph and we are excited to see what challenges and successes the new league brings.
