Focus on Campus Services: Undeb Bangor Activities Hub and Bar Uno refurbishment

Following the refurbishment of Bar Uno, the first floor of the Ffriddoedd building has been converted from its previous use as the University Estates department offices to create a social hub for the Studentsโ€™ Union, Undeb Bangor clubs, societies and volunteering projects.

This refurbishment has consolidated and improved facilities for clubs and societies and volunteers to meet, creating a sense of identity and place. With a large range of activities to cater for, the space has delivered eight flexible, multipurpose rooms. This refurbishment has been funded through a Higher Education Funding Council Wales (HEFCW) capital grant and has been made possible through a collaborative effort from both Campus Services and Undeb Bangor.

Feature walls have been adorned with Undeb Bangor logos and graphics making it bright and inviting. Special consideration has been given to the space used by volunteer groups working with vulnerable children, where safeguarding will be of paramount importance.

A lift has been installed, corridors have been widened to allow wheelchair access and a staircase from Bar Uno has been reinstated. The toilet provision on the first floor has been increased and two gender-neutral WCs installed along with an upgraded accessible WC.

Mair Rowlands, Studentsโ€™ Union Director, said: โ€œThe building formerly operated as two separate floors with no connectivity, but this has now been rectified. The flow of the building has been greatly improved and will ensure accessibility to all users. The hub has been designed to provide flexibility of use will greatly benefit Undeb Bangorโ€™s clubs, societies and volunteering projects.

Undeb Bangor will be making use of the space for the first time this week for the Societies and Volunteering Awards which will be a valuable opportunity to celebrate and recognise individual, group and project successes in enhancing the student experience and making a positive contribution to the local community and celebrating the completion of the work on the new Activities Hub.

Katie Tew, Vice-President Societies & Volunteering, said: โ€œWeโ€™re very excited for students to see the transformation of the space above Bar Uno into a space for student groups to utilise, and to celebrate the completion of the work as well as the achievements of our societies and volunteers as part of the Societies and Volunteering Awards.โ€
