In order to express meaningful solidarity with the urgent struggle to stop Israelโ€™s unfolding genocide in Gaza, Bangor University should seek to divest from companies, businesses and/or corporations  that are:

  • involved in Israelโ€™s illegal settlement enterprise;
  • profiting from the ongoing Israeli occupation;
  • involved in the illegal Israeli settlement enterprise in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Reviewing Bangor Universityโ€™s March 2024 statement of financial holdings, there are a number of companies, businesses and/or corporations that have been identified by authoritative sources to be profiting from the actions of the Israeli government and military.

Bangor University has (on May 2024), fourteen holdings with:

  • Allianz SE
  • Siemens AG
  • ING Group NV
  • Axa, Paris
  • Estre Bank der Oesterreichsischen Sparkassen Ag
  • Intesa Sanpaolo
  • Carrefour Sa
  • RELX PLC
  • HSBC Holding Plc
  • Aviva Plc
  • NatWest Group Plc
  • Lloyds Banking Group PLC
  • Microsoft Corp
  • Alphabet Inc

These fourteen holdings total nearly a quarter of the Universityโ€™s investment portfolio and that amount to ยฃ1,260,141.

This petition calls on Bangor University to work with their portfolio manager, UBS to divest holdings in companies profiting from the genocide of the Palestinian people and to commit to not holding any in the future.

Bangor University is encouraged to develop a robust ethical screening process with UBS using the below authoritative sources to cross-reference current and future financial investments:

If Bangor University acts it will send a very powerful message of support to the people of Palestine.

Additionally such action will demonstrate to staff and students that Bangor University is, as it states in its Sustainable Investment Policy, continues to aim โ€œto be a place that promotes the well-being of current and future generations, justice, integrity and sustainable growth in our societyโ€โ€ฆ here in Wales and across the globe.

    Good work on this, thank you so much! Looking into the mutual funds through UBS and Blackrock, Bangor Universities corruption goes even deeper, with investments with Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Barclays, JP Morgan, BP, etc. There is even an investment (via mutual funds with Blackrock) that send money directly to the Israeli government. Come down to the encampment to learn more about the investments! We are always looking to educate others and have new people show solidarity!

    A few of the companies you have highlighted are also highly complicit in the exploitation in the DRC. Alphabet, Apple, and Microsoft are knowingly using and abusing those in Congo for their natural resources/minerals such as cobalt and coltan to create (in mass) the technological devices such as iphones. All of these companies are interconnected to all of the slavery and genocides happening in our current time and change must happen.
