Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and the impact of the recent Cyclone Freddy has been devastatingl floods have washed away crops, over 500,000 people have been displaced and hundreds lost their lives.
Bangor Fairtrade Group was awarded a grant in 2021-22 under Hub Cymru Africa to support and promote fairtrade and sustainable livelihood products from Malawi, with work taking place in the Southern region. Plans now focus on expanding the project across the whole of Malawi to help small scale producers market their products and gain the benefits of fairtrade for thr whole community.
Volunteer and gain valuable research experience, training opportunities, connect with Fairtrade Africa, Fairtrade Foundation UK and local NGO's and deliver events and camapigns linked to the project.
To celebrate Fairtrade's 30 years, Fairtrade Wales has launched a Youth Art Competition- https://fairtrade.wales/campaign/fair-trade-wales-youth-art-competition/. They're looking for the following:
One side of A4 painting, drawing digital/physical, poem or video (song/poem/performance).
Under the theme "Fairtrade and Deforestation Free" – How does Fairtrade work to make an impact against deforestation?
We're looking for volunteers to help deliver fun and creative sessions in primary schools to raise awareness of Fairtrade among our local youth population. Work with children to create their own art pieces to enter in the competition.
Exact dates and timings of sessions in schools to be confirmed (taking place mid- end of November).
